Short Bio: Sephiroth
Sephiroth was born to Shinra scientists Lucrecia Crescent and Professor Hojo. During Lucrecia’s pregnancy, the pair discovered a mysterious specimen they believed to be a Cetra (or Ancient), later named Jenova. In pursuit of a super-soldier, Shinra initiated the Jenova Project, injecting Jenova cells into Lucrecia’s unborn child.
Sephiroth grew up unaware of his true parentage and was told Jenova was his mother. Raised by Shinra and trained as a SOLDIER, he became a war hero and the most elite operative in the organization.
Years later, during a mission to the Nibelheim Mako Reactor, Sephiroth uncovered classified experiment files in the Shinra Mansion basement. Misinterpreting the data, he concluded he was not born but created—and that, as a Cetra hybrid, he was the planet’s rightful heir. Viewing humanity as a threat, he descended into madness.
He burned Nibelheim to the ground and returned to the reactor to retrieve Jenova’s remains. There, he was confronted by fellow SOLDIER Zack Fair and infantryman Cloud Strife. After a brutal confrontation, Sephiroth was cast (or possibly leapt) into the Lifestream below the reactor.
Presumed dead, Sephiroth’s body drifted through the Lifestream until it reached the Northern Crater. There, he absorbed vast knowledge and Mako energy, forming a new plan: to summon Meteor, scar the planet, and absorb the Lifestream as it rushed to heal the wound—thus becoming a god.
What Really Happened
By the time of Final Fantasy VII, the Sephiroth seen by the party is not the man who fell at Nibelheim. Jenova, in truth an alien lifeform—not a Cetra—had crash-landed at the Northern Crater millennia ago. Its cells corrupted Sephiroth’s body, allowing it to use him as a vessel.
While Sephiroth’s will remained strong, he became a puppet for Jenova’s plan: to trigger a planetary wound, draw the Lifestream to it, and absorb the planet’s life force. Through the Reunion instinct, Sephiroth called Jenova’s scattered cells back to him, manipulating others to retrieve the Black Materia and summon Meteor.
Though Meteor was successfully summoned, Cloud and his allies confronted Sephiroth in the Northern Crater. After a climactic battle, they defeated him before he could complete the absorption. Meteor struck, but without Sephiroth to channel the Lifestream, the planet survived.
